Read each passage entirely; dont just jump from question to question

When a lot of students start studying for ACT English/SAT Writing, one of the first things they often wonder is whether they actually really need to read the entire passage, or whether its ok to just skip from question to question. My answer? A resounding yes and no. That is, yes, they have to read everything, no they cant just skip from question to question. Heres why: ACT English and SAT multiple-choice Writing are context-based tests. Sometimes youll be asked about grammar, and sometimes youll be asked about content and structure. Both kinds of questions are often dependent on the surrounding sentence, however. A question testing verb tense may have four answers that are acceptable in isolation but only one answer thats correct in context. If you dont look at the surrounding sentences and see that theyre in the past, you might not realize that the verb in question has to be in the past as well. Furthermore, its often impossible to answer rhetoric questions without a general knowledge of the paragraph or passage. If youve been reading the passage all along, youre a lot more likely to be able to spot answers immediately since youll be able to tell whether a given choice is or is not consistent with the passage. If, on the other hand, you suddenly start reading surrounding sentences, youre more likely to miss important information because you dont have the full context for them.

How Would You Direct Act 3 Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet for a Contemporary Audience at the Globe Theatre? Essay Two star-crossd lovers, secretly married and so tragically separated in a vile forfeit of their young lives. The ill fated plot of Romeo and Juliet in which act 3 scene 1 plays an essential role in the structure of the play. Shakespeares decision to kill off Mercutio, a prominent character, not only gives Romeo the rage to kill Tybalt but also removes Mercutios wit and humour, which may have caused a distraction from the affliction of the play. The scene stimulates the tension seen throughout the play from this point. The scene is full of heat, passion and anger emphasising the turning point of the play. Romeos banishment and Tybalts death adds more pressure on his secret marriage to Juliet. The play was written between 1594 and 1596, when theatre and audiences were very different to what they are today. In the 1500s the theatre was one of the only places to socialize and people often visited the afternoon performances frequently. The audience would be rowdy, often drunk and loud throughout the performances, whereas nowadays, audiences are much more polite and respectful towards the actors and the play. A performance in the 1500s had to grab the audiences attention and get its message across; it took a fantastic playwright such as Shakespeare to do this. Romeo and Juliet begins, Two houses both alike in dignity, the first words of the play describe the two families, Montague and Capulet. Both families alike in nobility but the ancient grudge between them so strong it takes the death of Romeo, Juliet and their love, before settling the feud is even considered. The reason for the start of the feud is unknown but it affects everyone from the lords to the servants and often leads to public displays of violence. Today, if the play was performed for a modern audience the feud could be made relevant by making the families different races to introduce a modern issue in the play which would give the audience a better understanding and perhaps something they could relate too. The differences between the Montagues and Capulets could be shown on stage by the use of Costume. I would dress the Capulets as catholics, all wearing rosaries, for example and the Montagues would wear traditional Hindu costume. In this way, a religious aspect is brought to the play and new tensions between the families are automatically created. Stage properties are important for defining location and giving the audience visual understanding. During Act 3 scene 1 both Mercutio and Tybalt are killed. In the 1500s their deaths would have been illustrated by the use of prop swords but today guns would perhaps be a more realistic choice of prop. Nowadays, we also have the use of new technology to create realistic effects involving lighting and sound. Shakespeares audiences would have had to rely on the dramatists words to explain time of day, since all performances took place in the early afternoon. The use of lighting would be able to show the time passed between Mercutios death and Tybalts. Sound effects would make the scene more realistic and exciting. Actors of the sixteenth century very much relied on the words to convey the idea of time and realism. The roofed galleries of the globe seated the richest of the 16th century population, the poorer, groundlings, stood in a yard in which the stage projected into. Two doors at the back of the stage would make the entrances and exits of the scene. The scene begins, a hot Italian summer afternoon, peace keeping Benvolio recommends leaving to Mercutio; as he knows Capulets are around, And if we meet we shall not scape a brawl. Mercutio responds with his usual humour and we see the energy of his character when Tybalt arrives in search of Romeo. When Romeo will not fight, Tybalt does not understand and will not be satisfied. Even as he lies, death almost upon him, Mercutios wit is still present, he comments that if Romeo asks for him tomorrow he shall find him, a grave man. His character is so vibrant and energetic. The audience are always waiting to see what he will do next, perhaps this is why Shakespeare decided to remove him from this point as there is no relaxing of speed or tension from now on. Romeo blames himself for Mercutios death and filled with, fiery-eyd fury, for a moment he forgets his new bride and seeked vengeance for his dead friend. This part of the scene is exciting and anxious, the audience feel for Romeo as they can see the helplessness of his situation. He is nothing more than, Fortunes fool. Loyal Benvolio is eager for Romeo to get away, for if he stays he faces the death penalty for brawling in the streets and killing Tybalt but Romeo knows if he leaves he risks losing his Juliet. Again the audience sympathise with Romeo, as he is a victim of fate. Lady Capulet remains a hard and vengeful woman in theme with the feud and insists Romeo be put to death as she wails, For blood of ours shed blood of Montague. Prince Escalus can do neither more nor less than banish Romeo because he has broken the law and must be duly punished. The action and apprehension of the scene can be brought to life on stage by the use of set, props, music and costume. The main frame of the scene is the deaths of both Mercutio and Tybalt. When the conflict begins at the opening of the scene, Benvolio states, We talk here in the public haunt of men: Either withdraw unto some private place, Or reason coldly of your grievances, Or else depart. Here all eyes gaze on us. This suggests that the scene is set in the eye of the public; so to constitute a relevance to a modern day audience I would set the scene in a pub. I would change the setting of Tybalts death so that I could show a passing of time. After a car chase, I would set Tybalts felony in a small country road because Romeo then has time to leave before the Prince arrives. The costumes worn during the scene would resemble the type of character being portrayed and help highlight key characteristics. Mercutio, for example, is loud and bubbly therefore his clothes would be vibrant and strong colours. Whereas in contradiction, Tybalt would wear clothes that would make him appear callous and malicious, probably black in colour. Romeo has just returned from his wedding, so he would be wearing smart clothes, most likely a suit. The use of music throughout the scene is important to add to the anxiety and concern of the audience. After Mercutios death, when Romeo is full of fury and the scene is very heated, I would use music that added to the passion and created an extra discomfort. When Mercutio and Tybalt, first begin to quarrel, Mercutios vitality comes across in his teasing manner. He deliberately mistakes Tybalts meanings on numerous occasions. For example, When Romeo arrives, Tybalts attention turns to him and he declares, Here comes my man. The two scenes create a powerful dramatic contrast. The audience are left with a longing to find out what happens next and if Romeo and Juliet will reclaim their love. By using visual aids. The play can be brought into the present and still keep its tragic plot but have more purpose and realism to a modern audience. By inserting racial and religious tensions into the play, todays issues are dealt with and the audience can relate to the story. Shakespeare was a fantastic playwright and his work is adaptable to any time period, which is why it is still so popular today.

If we consider the some facts, we find women work two-thirds of the world’s working, whereas women (i) earn only 10 percent of the world’s income, (ii) own less than 1 percent of the world’s property, (iii) make up two-thirds of the total adults worldwide who cannot read or write. 2 All these hold good in case of Assam economy also. Moreover, it is prepared mostly with secondary data, also depending on observation. The activities for women in soil conservation, social forestry, dairy development and other occupations allied to agriculture like horticulture, livestock including small animal husbandry, poultry, fisheries etc are being expanded to benefit women workers in the agriculture sector. Among these activities traditional industries like handicraft, weaving, preparation of traditional wine, piggery and poultry are mentionworthy.Women of Assam enjoy somewhat a disadvantageous position both in absolute sense and relative to men in the area of access to education, employment,exp osure to media, household decision making capacity, workforce participation rate, control over resources etc. Micro-finance – including micro-credits – is often considered as an instrument that promotes empowerment. So, for creating the goal an empowered women for economic development, the following strategies need to be taken into action by the Govt. in partnership with NGO and Community— 1. Creating community demand for girls education not only elementary level but also all the level of education. 2. The Technical and Voca tional education should be made available for girls. 3.Nos of such school need to extent up to all village of the community. 4. The adult education programme in rural area is essential. 5. Efforts should made to solve the drop out problem of girls education in rural area 6. Participation of women in the high income generating activities like fashion designing, tailoring, food processing beautician, need to increase. For which following means should be adopted: a. Training facilities should be there in rural area through which the women of the community will get better chance to be specialized in this field. b.Knowledge and information on Global changing business environment like marketing in formation, the change of test, habit, preference of the consumer should be provided regularly through government and Non-government efforts like NGO, SHGs, Mahila Sangathan. c. Gender and poverty sensation programme should be developed to create an environment where by all will work together to remove all the disparities physical, social and economic. Where Should You Take the ACT SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips You don't want to walk in the morning of the ACT only to find you have to take the test on a super-tiny desk. If you're preparing for the ACT, you've probably spent a lot of time studying and getting ready for the test. But you probably haven't given that much thought to the physical location of your test (especially if you're taking it as a part of your state’s mandatory testing). However, the place you take the ACT could definitely affect your performance. Read our guide to choosing the best possible ACT test location so you can knock it out of the park. How to Search for Test Locations Before we can even talk about what makes a good center, we need to go over how to find those test centers to begin with. Keep in mind this guide is intended for students taking the test outside of mandatory state testing sessions. If your high school requires you to take the ACT, you won't be able to choose the location for that session of the test. But if you sign up on your own, you will be able to chose. The ACT website has two test center search methods – one that’s easier to use but less detailed, and one that’s more cumbersome but gives you more info. We’ll tell you about both. Method One: ACT’s Test Center Search The easiest way to start looking for an ACT Test Center is to use the search feature on ACT’s website. This basic search method allows you to search by country, state, and city. Image via the ACT Student website. The upside is that this is a quick method, and you don’t have to begin registering for the test. The downside is that since you can only search by city and state, and not zip code/distance, you might overlook test centers close to you. However, for some states, this basic method might be all you need. For example, in Rhode Island, there are only two test centers that offer the test on all ACT dates, and eleven centers total. If you live in RI, that would probably make your choice of test center pretty straightforward, unless you want to consider options over the border. Image via the ACT Student website. But for big states like California and Texas, you might need a more fine-grained search to be able to sort through the options closest to you. If that's the case, you may want to consider the second search method. Method Two: Begin to Register for the ACT Unfortunately, the best method for an ACT test center search is within the test registration process. You don’t have to complete your registration, but use this method if you want to do a more efficient search by zip code. For some reason, both the SAT and the ACT only let you search test centers by zip code once you’ve begun to register. Once you begin to register for the ACT, you can search for test centers by zip code. Image via the ACT Student website. The registration search method will give you a list of the test centers nearest to you. This is especially helpful if you live close to a different city or even a state line, as it will show you options over the border. A list of possible test centers found with the zip code search. So if you use this search method and see that you have a lot of options, how do you choose the best test center? Your choice depends on a few important factors, which we will cover in order of importance. How Far Away is the Center? You don’t want to risk a travel crisis the morning of the ACT. For that reason alone, it’s wise to choose a test center as close to your home as possible. In most cases, the closer, the safer, especially if traffic or weather issues arise. Also think about the parking and/or drop-off situation at the location. A high school parking lot might be crazy the morning of the ACT. In any case, always give yourself more time than you think you’ll need to get to the ACT on time. This is not the morning to be late! Do You Know the Building? Once you’re inside the center, you’ll be less stressed out if you know how to get around. For example, if it’s your own high school, even if you’re headed to a room you’ve never had a class in, you’ll likely be able to find it easily. This means less unnecessary stress on test day. However, if you’re in a different high school or university building, and have to go looking for your test room, that could cause unnecessary stress, especially if you take a wrong turn or get lost. If you have to go to an unfamiliar location (say if your high school doesn’t offer the ACT) you might consider scoping out the center ahead of time. Will You Run Into Friends? Will seeing friends or classmates at the ACT relax you, or stress you out? For some students, seeing their friends and talking before the test could help them relax and focus. For others, seeing classmates could remind them of competition and college application stress, so being with strangers might be more relaxing. There is no problem with being either type of person. But be introspective and try to decide if being with familiar faces will be good or bad for you, and plan accordingly. If you'll be especially stressed out by familiar faces, you might consider traveling a bit farther to go to a different test location. Are There Issues With the Test Center? Aside from the big issues of location and people present, there could be other, unexpected issues that make a test center better or worse. What are the rooms like? For example, windowless rooms can be oppressive and stressful for some students. For others, sitting by a window could be distracting. Does the room have decent temperature control? You don’t want to be taking the ACT either uncomfortably hot or cold. If the high school across town has AC and yours doesn’t, you might prefer to go across town, especially if you're taking the ACT in June. Think about other possible problems with the test center. Is there construction happening nearby that could be distracting? Odd smells or lighting issues? There are things that could unexpectedly cause problems the morning of the test. If you're easily distracted, make sure to scope out potential test centers carefully. They came in like wrecking ball... and ruined your concentration during the ACT. The bigger the desk or table you get to use, the easier, since you’re going to be juggling your answer sheet and test booklet. Trying to cram everything onto a tiny desk is an annoyance you might not want to deal with on test day. Should I Just Test at my High School? After going through all these different potential testing locations and issues, you might think that just going to your high school is the best option. This is likely the case for many students, but consider the following potential problems before you register. First, as we discussed above, being around friends and classmates can be stressful for some students. Will familiar faces distract you or stress you out? You might want the â€Å"blank slate† experience of going to a different location. Second, is there a closer location? Don’t underestimate morning-of travel and weather issues. If you commute across town to go to school, going to a location closer to home could save you morning-of travel time and stress. Are there known issues with your high school, like small desks, lack of heating/cooling, or a nearby construction project? You might want to seek out a different test center at a local University or different high school for a better testing environment. Do you tend to lose focus in environments you’re used to? Some people prefer the environment of a new testing center. Of course, for others, being in familiar locations is less stressful. That said, if you don't have any of those issues, your high school can be the best bet since you’re familiar with it. Personally, I took the ACT at my high school and found it much less stressful than going to a different location for my SAT Subject Tests. I happened to live within walking distance of my high school, and I liked having a short walk the morning of the test to calm my nerves. Plus, since I wasn’t worried about finding the testing room, I was at ease that morning. In contrast, I found it stressful to drive to different location for the SAT subject tests and deal with finding my testing room in a big University building I’d never been to before. Remember, the best testing environment for you is all about your preferences and test-taking style. Take your own concerns and issues into account when choosing your test center. Other Tips Be aware of test center closings. Sometimes the ACT has to close test centers before a test due to weather or other unforeseen issues. Check your email carefully in the weeks and days leading up to the test in case this happens to your test center. Drive to the testing location before the morning of the test if you’ve never been there. Don’t rely on your GPS to get you there without problems the morning of. There could be problems with the route, or the address given might not take you to the right entrance. If you make the drive before the morning of the test, you can make sure to avoid any last-minute crises. If you have a long drive the morning of, pack your breakfast with you to save time. You could put together a playlist for the drive as well. Either choose relaxing music if you tend to stress out, or music that will get you amped if you need some extra motivation! You could also bring along some flashcards or practice problems to get your brain going in the car. If you’ve already registered but decide you want to switch locations, you can change your ACT location after registering, but there’s a $28 fee and locations fill up the closer you get to the test.
